Chile’s economic growth will slow very slightly in 2026 but will remain close to its potential, while inflation will fluctuate around the 3% target. The mining sector continues to be an important driver of growth: high copper and lithium prices are bolstering exports and investment projects. The pace of fiscal consolidation and the investment outlook will largely depend on the new government's ability to implement the economic measures announced during the presidential campaign. Despite the proliferation of initiatives aimed at developing the AI sector, its contribution to growth remains low. Mining resources are an asset and projects are multiplying, but environmental and social constraints will have to be addressed.
Strong exports helped the Mexican economy to avoid recession in 2025, despite geopolitical tensions. Sluggish investment is a structural weakness in the country, and the outlook is not favourable. However, driven by household consumption, activity is expected to rebound in 2026, and Mexican growth could reach its potential. Nevertheless, the short- and medium-term outlook hinges largely on the outcome of the USMCA negotiations. The same is true in the AI sector, as the sharp increase in exports of AI-related products to the United States masks a structural weakness in the local industry, which is still primarily a low value-added assembly platform. Here again, the outlook hinges on future USMCA negotiations, which could introduce new regulatory requirements.

Mexican economic growth held up well in the first half of 2025. The slowdown is expected to be more pronounced in the coming quarters: export momentum is likely to diminish due to the implementation of US tariffs, while domestic demand is expected to remain sluggish. Inflation is expected to decelerate moderately, and the cycle of monetary policy easing is likely to continue in 2026. Public finances represent a structural weakness in the Mexican economy. Consistent support for the oil company Pemex, fiscal spending rigidity and overly optimistic projections used by the government when setting its annual budget have resulted in the failure of the consolidation policies proposed by successive administrations. The Mexican government has announced plans to increase customs tariffs. Asian countries in general, and China in particular, are being targeted. The measure is expected to be adopted by Parliament in November before being implemented next January for a period of one year.

The protectionist shock imposed by the United States will lead to further adjustments in production chains and global trade. Will emerging countries (excluding China) be able to benefit once again, even as competition from Chinese products intensifies on their domestic markets? Will they be able to gain market share in the United States, or even in China? Will they be able to reduce their dependence on either of the two superpowers?
The outlook continues to deteriorate in Mexico, one of the countries most exposed to US economic policy. The Mexican economy is set to contract in the coming quarters, with weak domestic demand unable to offset the marked slowdown in exports. Mexico's Minister of the Economy has begun talks with Washington on a faster-than-expected renegotiation of the USMCA free-trade agreement. The aim is to reduce the short-term uncertainty surrounding bilateral relations between the two countries.
GDP growth is holding up rather well in Chile, buoyed by the mining sector and a solid domestic demand. The outlook is relatively favourable: inflation is contained, fiscal consolidation should continue and political risk remains moderate in the run-up to the presidential election at the end of the year. Lastly, apart from the announcements regarding the copper sector, the direct impact of the increase in tariffs imposed by the Trump administration on the Chilean economy is relatively low. Indirect effects, volatile commodity prices and uncertainties over the pace of progress in the global low-carbon transition, on the other hand, represent a very significant risk for the Chilean economy.
The vast majority of Latin American countries have been subject to 10% tariffs, the minimum rate, since April 2, imposed by the Trump administration. This leniency is due to the composition of their exports (raw materials and energy, whereas the Trump administration's “reciprocal” tariffs mainly targeted exporters of manufactured goods) and the fact that most of them have a trade deficit with the US.
South Korea's economic growth slowed throughout 2024, with limited prospects for a rebound. The political crisis and unprecedented government instability in the country are likely to result in a marked slowdown in domestic demand. The outlook for the export sector (mainly semiconductors) will depend in part on the trade policy adopted by the new US administration. South Korea is not directly targeted by tariff measures for the time being, but the resulting upheaval in value chains will adversely affect exports. Economic policy will remain accommodative: the Central Bank and the interim government have already proposed support measures, but the stimulus will not be enough to significantly boost growth, which is likely to continue to slow in 2025.
The Mexican economy is slowing down and the short-term outlook is not favourable. The constitutional reforms enacted in recent months (including the reform of the judicial system) are damaging the institutional framework and deterring investment. In addition, consumption could be hit hard by the fiscal consolidation plan announced by the government. Above all, Mexico is one of the most vulnerable countries to the US economic policy change. The new migration measures could significantly reduce money transfers from foreign workers, which significantly support the country's growth. The expected customs tariffs applied would also have severe consequences for the Mexican economy in terms of growth and inflation.
In Chile, the recovery in economic activity seen in 2024 is expected to continue in 2025. Commodity exports will remain strong, while private consumption will benefit from slowing inflation and a gradually improving labour market. Against a political backdrop marked by ongoing tensions, and an opposition coalition strengthened by the results of recent local elections, the government is trying to press ahead with its flagship reforms, relating to the energy sector in particular, before the end of its term, which will be in late 2025. Against this backdrop, public finances are still being gradually consolidated, at a slower pace than initially anticipated.
The election of Donald Trump as President of the United States has raised fears that protectionist measures will be stepped up. Customs duties would be applied to all products from all of the United States' trading partners. In addition to China, the main country targeted, concerns about the macroeconomic and financial consequences of such a policy have risen sharply in Mexico.
Claudia Sheinbaum was elected President of Mexico on 2 June. The political and economic challenges she will face during her mandate are numerous, and mainly concern the sustainability of public finances, the reform of the energy sector (a particularly sensitive point in Mexico, especially in the context of nearshoring and renewed appeal to foreign investors) and the renegotiation of the trade treaty with Canada and the United States (UMSCA) in 2026. In the short term, as a member of the Morena party of the former outgoing President, the new President needs to find the appropriate distance from Andres Manuel Lopes Obrador and his supporters. Discussions relate in particular to the reform of the justice system that AMLO himself had proposed.
Energy and mineral commodities are central to the low carbon transition process. Latin America, which boasts abundant amounts of minerals and key metals for the transition, and GCC[1] countries, which are dependent on revenue from hydrocarbons, are seemingly, on the face of it, taking contrasting paths on the transition journey. However, the macroeconomic consequences cannot easily be determined currently. Gulf countries have some advantages in the oil market, but the pace of the transition could affect revenues more quickly than expected. In Latin America, while the size of critical minerals reserves is brightening the outlook, various national strategies and numerous constraints could curb the scale
Chile’s economic growth stabilised during the second half of 2023, inflation eased and the current account deficit fell. The expected upturn in activity in 2024 should ensure that growth comes close to its potential, driven by household consumption, private investment and mining exports. Political pressures have eased after the decision to suspend the process of adopting a new Constitution (which is expected to be left alone for a number of years). Nevertheless, Gabriel Boric’s government and the opposition parties are still clashing on a number of areas, most notably, fiscal reform, pension system reform and the energy sector framework law.
Strong household consumption and the return of tourists should help economic growth to accelerate over the next few quarters. The lack of competitiveness of the export sector and the effects of El Niño are the key risks to growth and exports. In addition, the political situation remains tense and the government coalition looks fragile. Budgetary slippage may occur and the Bank of Thailand is expected to pause its monetary easing.
Mexico’s economic activity is expected to slow in the next few quarters under the combined effect of the slowdown in the US economy and the continuation of high interest rates. Beyond 2024, growth could be supported by a new driver, nearshoring, the effects of which are starting to be seen in export and investment data. The next administration, to be elected in June 2024, will therefore face the challenge of implementing the structural reforms necessary to take full advantage of this new relocation strategy and maintain financial support for Pemex, while limiting the slippage in public finance.

Chile seems to have made more progress with the energy transition than most Latin American countries. The combination of a favourable geography, significant resources, the aspirations of public opinion and political will has favoured implementation of a number of measures for almost 25 years. Since he came to power in 2022, Gabriel Boric has undertaken to exceed the goals set up to that point, on a country level, by achieving carbon neutrality before 2050, and on an international level, by developing lithium and green hydrogen production and export capacities.
On 22 June, the Mexican Central Bank maintained its main policy rate at 11.25% for the second time in a row. The Governing Board’s decision was unanimous and largely anticipated. In its press release, the Board stated that the pause should continue over the coming months: the downward trend in inflation seems to be confirmed, but the outlook remains «complex and uncertain».
On May 14th, legislative elections were held in Thailand to renew the 500 members of the House of Representatives. The "democratic" parties have presumably won more than 300 seats. The two main opposition parties, Pheu Thai and Move Forward, have won more than 290 seats. The opposition parties are discussing to recommend one nominee for the position of Prime Minister.
Korean economic growth lagged behind in Q4 2022, and the slowdown is expected to continue in 2023. Exports will suffer from slowing global demand, while domestic demand will be penalised by rising interest rates and persistent inflation. The risks of financial instability remain limited, but have increased in recent months. Household debt is high at almost 110% of GDP, and households are very exposed to rising interest rates. In fact, 76% of loans to households are being taken out at a variable rate. Potential credit risks though remain limited to the most vulnerable households.
Economic growth should slow significantly in 2023. The relative resilience of private consumption will not be enough to offset the slowdown in external demand, particularly from the US. In addition, the investment outlook remains limited. In the medium term, the Mexican economy could benefit from the relocation of American companies, a trend recently accelerated by the disruption of value chains linked to the pandemic and trade tensions between China and the United States. To take full advantage of this, Mexico will need to restore investor confidence and meet its energy policy commitments.
